2018 Relief Society Curriculum

I’m excited that beginning in January, Relief Society and Priesthood Sunday meetings will follow a new curriculum.

This new curriculum will invite more discussion from each sister.  I am looking forward to being spiritually fed and learning more.

“Sundays in Relief Society are no longer just the responsibility of the leaders,” said Brooke Jensen, a counselor in a Relief Society presidency. “Each member takes an active role.”

Sunday meetings will follow this schedule (I’ve included links with more explanation):

Fifth Sunday - Address a topic chosen by the bishopric.

The November Ensign has the full explanation of the new curriculum.

I hope you are able to take some time to read about the new Sunday curriculum.  As sisters, I believe that when we come to Relief Society ready to contribute we will bless lives.  I am grateful for inspired leaders and for a prophet who loves us and knows our needs.

Light - An Interfaith Community Thanksgiving Celebration

On November 21st, I was invited to participate at an Interfaith Community Thanksgiving Celebration. There were ministers from about a dozen denominations on the program, lots of beautiful music, candles and fellowship. The theme was Light. I was asked to read from the Book of Mormon, and share a few thoughts on this topic. Here is the message I shared with them:

LIGHT

The Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ
 Moroni chapter 7, verses 16-19:

16 For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God.
17 But whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do evil, and believe not in Christ, and deny him, and serve not God, then ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of the devil; for after this manner doth the devil work, for he persuadeth no man to do good, no, not one; neither do his angels; neither do they who subject themselves unto him.
18 And now, my brethren, seeing that ye know the light by which ye may judge, which light is the light of Christ, see that ye do not judge wrongfully; for with that same judgment which ye judge ye shall also be judged.
19 Wherefore, I beseech of you, brethren, that ye should search diligently in the light of Christ that ye may know good from evil; and if ye will lay hold upon every good thing, and condemn it not, ye certainly will be a child of Christ.

The Light of Christ has been described as the divine energy, power, or influence that proceeds from God through Christ and gives life and light to all things. The Light of Christ influences people for good and prepares them to receive the Holy Ghost.  (LDS.org)

Jesus Christ said, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8)

The Light of Christ "proceeds forth from the presence of God to fill the immensity of space." It is "the light which is in all things, which giveth life to all things, which is the law by which all things are governed." This power is an influence for good in the lives of all people.  In the scriptures, the Light of Christ is sometimes called the Spirit of the Lord, the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Christ, or the Light of Life.  (D&C 88:6-13, John 1:9, D&C 93:2)

The Light of Christ inspires poets, writers, artists, and musicians.  It motivates people to study, seek and experiment, ultimately leading to advances in science, medicine and technology that bless our lives.

Top of Form The Light of Christ is often referred to as our conscience. It is the influence of God that inspires us to be good and to do good things. It guides people to be kind to one another, to share of their means, to care for the sick and needy. The more we yield to that influence to do good, the more that light increases within us.  When we ignore those promptings and turn from the light, those promptings dim and may ultimately decrease.

When our minds are darkened, it becomes difficult to think and to see things clearly. We may struggle with decisions and lose sight of what we once knew and felt. We begin to make mistakes and poor choices. We may lose our way and find ourselves without hope.

Walking in the light of Christ, we are able to see clearly and discern between right and wrong. We recognize truth when we hear it and it becomes easier to make righteous choices. We feel hope in our hearts as we view our lives from an eternal perspective. Then, as we open our hearts to receive the Light of Christ, that light continues to grow and illuminate our minds.

Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has said: “ Every time you turn your hearts to God in humble prayer, you experience His light. Every time you seek His word and will in the scriptures, the light grows in brightness. Every time you notice someone in need and sacrifice your own comfort to reach out in love, the light expands and swells. Every time you reject temptation and choose purity, every time you seek or extend forgiveness, every time you courageously testify of truth, the light chases away darkness and attracts others who are also seeking light and truth.”  Bearers of Heavenly Light Oct 2017

We all have this light within us, no matter who we are, no matter our race, gender, or culture.  It existed in us before we were born, and will be with us throughout our lives.  And…it will not perish when our time on this Earth is through.
In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Change Reflects Ongoing Revelation

Recently, we have seen announcements of various changes to implementation of Church programs and meetings. The most recent changes announced involved visiting teaching, Priesthood & Relief Society curriculum, General Conference meeting schedules and missions/missionary work.

I realize that not everyone is connected through the social media resources of the Church and may have not seen the recent posts published by the Church in conjunction with these announcements.  To help facilitate allowing our sisters to stay current, I am simply posting the links to these recent announcements.  We will undoubtedly receive further information and instruction through our local leaders regarding how these changes are to be implemented.

Priesthood & Relief Society Curriculum

Visiting Teaching

General Conference Sessions

Missions

It is important to remember that while procedures will change as circumstances require, the doctrine of Christ remains constant. Seeing these changes is a witness in itself to the reality of modern revelation.  I would encourage you to take the time to read about these changes, to see how they may directly affect you and your family and to see how you can prepare to allow these changes to bless your life.

Message from our Temple President

As we look ahead to the lengthy closure of the Washington DC Temple, we need to be doing what we can to prepare for that interval of change. Recently, while dropping off family file names at the temple, I picked up the following letter from our temple president. I felt it was important to publish here, so that the information could be further distributed. If you click on either "document" it will open in a larger view for easier reading.

Christmas Wishes to Our Missionaries 2017

It's that time of year again...time to think about sending Christmas Wishes to all the missionaries serving from the Columbia Maryland Stake.  When I began collecting the photos and verifying addresses there were over 30 missionaries listed as serving from our stake.  But as I began to hear back from parents, I learned that several of them would be returning home prior to Christmas (my own missionary daughter included!)...a couple of these amazing missionaries returned just in the last 2 weeks.  It's always wonderful to gather the photos and see all the smiles and know that behind each smile are difficult days, hard work, long hours, tears and fears.  But also behind each smile there is faith, there is diligence, there is love, there is courage, there is testimony.  How grateful I am for them and their willingness to serve with all their hearts.  We hope our sisters and their families across the Stake will join us this year in sending Christmas cards to each of these missionaries.  While the addresses are available through the LDS Tools app and lds.org - I have compiled them into a Google Doc for your convenience.  At the time of publication, I am still missing one address for a missionary still in the MTC - I will update the Google Doc asap for him.  Some parents did provide specific details on how mail should be sent to their missionaries, so please check for those.  If you want to send a package - please contact the parents directly to ensure you understand any protocols that may apply.  Thanks for supporting our missionaries!

Personal Moments with Gordon B. Hinckley

President Gordon B. Hinckley became the prophet just before I turned 11, and was the prophet until he passed away when I was 23. These were my key decision-making years, so as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he was definitely a huge influence in my life for good. A person teaches more by example than by what they say, and Gordon B. Hinckley was a great example in many ways. I will briefly discuss four ways the teachings of Gordon B. Hinckley have influenced for good/blessed my life.

Gordon B. Hinckley was a great example of optimism. He always had a positive attitude and a friendly smile on his face. Seeing his optimism influenced me to want to be an optimistic person also because I could see that optimism equals happiness.

Gordon B. Hinckley was happy to tell others about the gospel, and share his testimony with them. I still remember when our family gathered on my parents’ bed to watch his interview with Mike Wallace on television. I was so impressed that he had the faith and courage to face the world in such a bold manner. Seeing his courage in sharing his beliefs has taught me that I can also have that same courage in sharing with others my testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Gordon B. Hinckley was a great example of how to be a good spouse. He and his wife, Marjorie, were such a cute, loving couple. You could tell in the way they treated each other with utmost love and respect. President Hinckley was instrumental in the bringing forth of The Family: A Proclamation to the World, which offers great counsel on marriage and family matters. Seeing his example, and studying The Family: A Proclamation to the World has influenced me to be a better spouse, and helped me to better understand how a marriage and family should be.

Gordon B. Hinckley also taught about the importance of temples. During the time he served as prophet, the number of operating temples leaped from 47 to 124. I remember attending youth temple baptisms at the Portland, Oregon temple. Each visit was a special experience. They helped me to gain a testimony of the importance of temple ordinances, temple work, and family history.

I love Gordon B. Hinckley. I am grateful that he was the prophet during such crucial years of my life. I am grateful for all the wonderful things I have learned from him. I am grateful for his good example.
